Art-Based Therapy

Art-based therapy is a creative way to express your feelings and thoughts through art. You don't have to be an artist. It's a safe space where you can use art to process emotions, reduce stress, and discover new insights. Art-based therapy can help you heal and grow, even when words are hard to find.

  • Do I need to be an artist or have art experience to benefit?
No, you don't need to be an artist or have any prior art experience to benefit from our Art-Based Therapy sessions. It's about self-expression and exploration, and not about artistic skill.
  • What supplies do I need?
Basic art supplies like paper, pencils, markers and crayons are typically enough to get started. We can assist you with any other specific materials during the sessions, if needed.
  • Will you teach me art-based therapy techniques?
Art therapy is not an art class in the traditional sense, and we won't be providing technical instructions on drawing or painting. Instead, we'll introduce various art prompts that are intended to inspire your creativity and emotional expression. In Art-Based Therapy, the focus isn't on creating a polished final product; it's about the emotions and experiences that arise during the creative process. We'll create a safe and non-judgmental space where you can freely explore your feelings, express yourself, and engage in the creative process without any pressure to meet specific artistic standards.
  • How often are the Art-Based Therapy sessions scheduled?
The frequency of sessions can vary depending on your needs and goals. Many people start with weekly sessions and adjust as they progress. Once we begin the therapy process we can determine the right schedule that will work for you.
  • Would my artwork be analysed?
We will not be interpreting your artwork in a prescriptive way. Instead, we will help you explore the feelings and thoughts that arise during the creative process. The meaning you find in your art is personal and unique to you because we believe that you have all the answers that you need.
  • Do you talk during Art-Based Therapy?
Yes, communication is essential in Art-Based Therapy sessions. Art-Based Therapists are trained in talk therapy and counselling. Talking helps us understand your thoughts and emotions, work on your goals, and support your therapeutic journey, which may involve developing coping strategies, problem-solving and more.
  • What can I expect in a typical Art-Based Therapy session?
In a session, you can expect to create art in a safe, supportive environment. Your therapist will encourage self-expression and exploration. You may discuss your artwork and the emotions it evokes, helping you gain insights and work through personal challenges.
